What Is Bleed in Print Design?

Bleed is the area of your design that extends beyond the final trim edge. When a printer cuts the paper to its final size, slight variations in cutting are inevitable. The bleed area ensures your design extends to the very edge of the paper, preventing unwanted white borders.

Standard Bleed Sizes

  • 3 mm (0.118") — Standard bleed for most commercial printing (EU standard)
  • 0.125" (3.175 mm) — Standard bleed in the US market
  • 5 mm (0.197") — Used for some large-format prints or when the printer specifies

How to Add Bleed in Figma

  1. Use this calculator to determine your total document size with bleed
  2. Create your Figma frame at the total (bleed-inclusive) pixel dimensions
  3. Extend background colors and images to the bleed edge
  4. Keep important content (text, logos) inside the trim area
  5. Export with Printery to automatically add crop marks that indicate where to cut

Alternatively, you can design at the trim size and let Printery add bleed automatically during export. The plugin supports configurable bleed amounts and adds crop marks for the print shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pixels is 3mm bleed at 300 DPI?

3mm bleed at 300 DPI equals approximately 35 pixels per side. That means you add 71 pixels total to both the width and height of your document.

What bleed size should I use?

Always check with your print shop first. The most common standard is 3mm (approximately 0.125 inches) on all sides. Some printers may request 5mm for specific projects.

Do I need to add bleed manually in Figma?

You can either extend your Figma frame to include bleed manually, or use Printery's automatic bleed feature which adds configurable bleed during PDF export.

What are crop marks?

Crop marks (also called trim marks) are small lines printed at the corners of your document that show the print shop exactly where to cut the paper. Printery automatically adds crop marks when you enable bleed in the export settings.
